What is a HDI file?

A .HDI file is a HotDocs Auto-Install file.

A HotDocs Auto-Install File (.HDI) is a package used by HotDocs to distribute and install a set of document automation templates and their associated library in one step. It bundles together the templates (with any resources they depend on, like graphics or component files), together with a HotDocs library definition. When a user runs the .HDI file, HotDocs installs the library and templates into the correct folders or updates an existing library if one already has the same library file name.

These files are created using HotDocs' Developer's Publishing Wizard. A template author selects templates and resources to include, chooses whether to publish them as individual .HDI files or as a grouped template set in a single .HDI, sets options like compatibility with earlier HotDocs versions, and then publishes. Users receive these .HDI files and install them, often by double-clicking or via command-line options that reference a local path or URL; HotDocs prompts for locations and any required configuration.

Technically, an .HDI file is a compressed archive (zip-compatible) containing the library file (.HDL), template files, component files, clause libraries, and optional additional resource files. Its in-vendor MIME type is application/x-hotdocs.
