GROUPPROJ File

What are GROUPPROJ files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a GROUPPROJ file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your GROUPPROJ files.

What is a GROUPPROJ file?

A .GROUPPROJ file is a Borland Group Project file.

A .GROUPPROJ file is used by Embarcadero Delphi (RAD Studio) to save a project group, which is a container that holds multiple Delphi projects together so you can build them as a set or switch between them in the IDE. Such a group might consist of several .dproj files, for example, related applications or libraries that depend on each other. This format allows you to work on multiple interconnected projects at once.

Delphi writes .GROUPPROJ files when you choose to group projects via the Project Manager (from Delphi 2007 onward). You typically open a GROUPPROJ inside the Delphi IDE, which then loads all the sub-projects included in the group, lets you set one as the active project for editing, and provides options such as Build All, Clean, or dependencies between projects. It is also version-control friendly because it is stored in text form.

GROUPPROJ is a text file using XML structure. It begins with an XML header containing a Project element with xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003". Internal identifiers include tags like Import, PropertyGroup, ItemGroup, and attributes such as Condition, ProjectGUID, and ProjectExtensions. Certain vendor-specific entries appear, such as BORLAND.PROJECTTYPE and CODEGEAR.GROUP.TARGETS.
