What is a GCW file?

A .GCW file is a Microsoft Math Worksheet file.

Microsoft Math Worksheet files (.gcw) are document files created by Microsoft Mathematics (formerly Microsoft Math). They serve as saved worksheets containing mathematical content such as algebraic and scientific equations, graphs, annotations made by hand using an Ink tool, and work in progress on problems. Students and users make a worksheet while solving math or science problems, then save it as a .gcw file to close the application and return later where they left off.

These worksheets are produced by Microsoft Mathematics and can be reopened and edited only within that program. Everything in the file reflects the state of the worksheet when it was saved, including graph visualizations, input equations, formatting choices, and any handwritten components. The format is proprietary to Microsoft and is not part of standard office document types.

A technical identifier appears at the start of many .gcw files: the file usually begins with an XML‐style header including "CasDocument DocVersion="2.0" and "EntriesZoomFactor="1" among others. The file also contains characteristic strings like "ASSIGNMENTS" and "CASDOCUMENT DOCVERSION".
