GCA File

What are GCA files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a GCA file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your GCA files.

What is a GCA file?

A .GCA file is a G Compression Archiver file.

The G Compression Archiver format (extension .GCA) is a file archive format made by Shin-ichi Tsuruta. It is used to combine one or more files and/or folders into a single compressed archive. The main purpose is to reduce disk space required for storage of mixed data (e.g. text, images, audio) while retaining all original file information. The format allows creation of self-extracting (SFX) archives, meaning the archive can unpack itself without needing separate extraction software.

Files in this format are produced by the G Compression Archiver tool. This is freeware for Windows, designed for a balance of high compression rate and fast decompression (unpacking) speed. The tool is also used by software enthusiasts for bundling game or application assets, installers, or distributing collections of files.

GCA archives are identified by certain byte signatures: they begin with the ASCII signature "GCAX" at offset 0, and contain "GCF" in ASCII at offset 16.
