What are GAI files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a GAI file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your GAI files.

What is a GAI file?

A .GAI file is an Adobe SING Glyphlet file.

Adobe SING Glyphlet (extension .gai) is a small font-like file used to provide a single additional glyph (or very few) called a glyphlet under Adobe's SING (Smart INdependent Glyphlets) framework, mainly for missing or variant characters in Asian languages (CJK).

These .gai files are created by design or font tools such as the Glyphlet Creation Tool (an Adobe Illustrator plug-in) or the Glyphlet Development Kit. After creation, the glyphlet is imported via Adobe SING Glyphlet Manager and then can be used in applications like Adobe InDesign or InCopy, where it is embedded in the document so that the custom glyph travels with the document and displays even on systems without that glyphlet installed in the font.

Inside, a .gai file behaves like a minimal OpenType font: it contains one meaningful glyph (plus required placeholders), outlines (TrueType or CFF), and supporting tables including the META table for metadata identifying its base font, ownership, and classification. It lacks some full font tables like the 'name' and 'OS/2' tables so it does not appear as a full selectable font in font menus.

Files begin with an sfnt-based OpenType header (ASCII "OTTO" etc.), followed by identifiers like "BASE", "CFF", "META", "SING", and "cmap" in known byte locations, marking this exact Glyphlet format.
