What are G722 files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a G722 file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your G722 files.

What is a G722 file?

A .G722 file is a Raw G.722 Audio file.

A Raw G.722 Audio File is a digital audio file that contains voice data encoded using the G.722 codec developed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). This format captures speech with wideband audio quality, meaning it records frequencies from roughly 50 Hz up to 7,000 Hz - significantly wider than older telephone codecs - resulting in clearer and more natural voice sound. It is especially used where voice intelligibility and fidelity matter, such as in VoIP calls or telecommunication systems.

The data in this file format is created by a G.722 encoder which compresses audio at one of three bitrates: 64 kilobits per second (kbps), 56 kbps, or 48 kbps. The most common bitrate is 64 kbps, with the lower ones allowing room in the bitstream for auxiliary data channels by reallocating bits from the lower frequency portion of the audio. Once encoded, the file stores the ADPCM-compressed sub-band stream directly, without wrapping in a container like WAV; playing it requires a decoder that understands G.722-encoded raw streams.

Technically, G.722 uses sub-band (split-band) adaptive differential pulse code modulation (ADPCM). It divides the incoming audio sampled at 16 kHz into two sub-bands (0-4 kHz and 4-8 kHz), encodes each with ADPCM, then multiplexes the results into a continuous stream. Depending on the mode, some bits from the lower band may be re-used for auxiliary data when operating at rates below 64 kbps.
