What are FAP files and how to open them

What is a FAP file?

FAP files have multiple uses, and Ensoniq Paris Audio is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Ensoniq Paris Audio File

Ensoniq Paris Audio File (.FAP) files store digital audio in the native format used by the PARIS workstation, a combined hardware/software Digital Audio Workstation developed by Ensoniq (later E-Mu) circa 1997-98. They contain waveform audio data recorded, edited, or mixed using PARIS, often used for multi-track recording projects within that system. PARIS supports audio files in its own PAF format by default and these FAP files are essentially the same format saved with a .fap extension.

These files are created within the PARIS software environment when recording or exporting audio using PARIS's proprietary format. Once recorded in PARIS as .paf (or .fap), the audio may be played back, mixed, edited, or converted to more common formats such as WAV or SD2 by PARIS or by later tools that support the format. PARIS projects refer to these files as "Audio Files," which reside on disk and can be imported into a project or used in non-destructive editing within PARIS.

Technically, .fap (and .paf) files use little-endian encoding, while PARIS also supports big-endian form under .paf. They may contain 16-bit or 24-bit linear audio samples, multiple channels, a sample rate field, and metadata such as version and comments in their headers. The audio data typically follows a fixed-size header (about 2048 bytes) after which the sample data begins.
