While EstImage Database is a popular type of EDB-file, we know of 6 different uses of the .EDB file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Microsoft Exchange Database

Files that contani the .edb file extension are most commonly used by mailbox data files that have been saved by the Microsoft Exchange Server. EDB is an acronym for Exchange Database.

The EDB files are exchange database files that store in-process and non-SMTP messages. These files are formatted using the b-tree structure. Each EDB file has a corresponding STM file which contains the actual SMTP messages.

Microsoft Extensible Storage Engine Database

Microsoft Extensible Storage Engine Database (EDB) is the mailbox and system database format used by Microsoft Exchange Server. It holds all mailbox items - emails, contacts, calendars, tasks, journal entries and public folder data - inside a single on-disk database file. Exchange's core storage engine, known as the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) or Jet Blue, manages this file to provide high concurrency, transactions, and recovery capabilities. A matching EDB file corresponds to one mailbox database in an Exchange server.

EDB files are produced by Microsoft Exchange when it creates or grows a mailbox database. Exchange writes items into the EDB as new mailboxes are added or mail is received, and uses additional files like transaction logs and checkpoint files to ensure reliability. System administrators work with EDB files when mounting or dismounting databases, performing backups or restores, or troubleshooting corruption. Versions of Exchange before 2007 used separate EDB and STM files, where STM stored raw internet-message bodies; newer versions consolidate into a single EDB format.

Inside, an EDB database is structured as a collection of fixed-size pages (often 4 KB by default) organized into B+-tree or ISAM-style indexed structures. Tables, indexes, and metadata are arranged into tree nodes so the engine can lookup, insert, delete, and update efficiently. The file header includes a magic signature (little-endian 0x89ABCDEF at offset 4) that identifies the file as ESE format.
