What are ECF files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening an ECF file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your ECF files.
What is an ECF file?
ECF files have multiple uses, and Microsoft Outlook Add-in is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
Microsoft Outlook Add-in
Files that contain the .ecf file extension are most commonly associated with the Microsoft Outlook email and calendar software application. The ECF files used with the Microsoft Outlook software contain add-ins that allow users to install extra features into the Outlook application.
The add-in files can be managed using the Add-In Manager found in the Advanced Options feature in the Outlook program.

All known file formats using extension .ECF
While Microsoft Outlook Add-in is a popular type of ECF-file, we know of 4 different uses of the .ECF file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
Embird Cross Stitch Embroidery Design
The Embird Cross Stitch Embroidery Design file format (.ECF) is a proprietary editable design file used by the Cross Stitch plug-in of the Embird machine embroidery software. It stores cross-stitch pattern projects in progress, preserving information like grid layout, cross stitch shapes and colors, fill pattern settings, and drawing edits before converting to stitches. It is not a machine-ready stitch file but an editable working format for pattern creation. Similar to a project or source file, it enables users to return later and modify the design using Embird's drawing tools, color palette, background importing, and pattern fill features.
This .ECF file is created and used only by Embird's Cross Stitch module, which is part of the Embird software package developed by BALARAD s.r.o. The user designs cross-stitch patterns manually - by placing crosses on a grid - or imports an image to auto-generate stitch shapes. Once satisfied, the user compiles the project into stitches and exports in a format compatible with an embroidery machine. .ECF files are saved via Cross Stitch > Save or Save As commands, or saved as fill patterns when placed specifically in the X_FILLS folder under the user's data directory.
An .ECF file begins with the ASCII signature "Embird CrossStitch v" at offset zero of the file.
