What are DMSM files and how to open them

What is a DMSM file?

A .DMSM file is a VideoWave Movie Project file.

A VideoWave Movie Project file (extension .DMSM) is the project file used by the VideoWave video editor, which is part of the Roxio Creator Suite. It stores all the settings and structure of a video production, including which video, image, and audio files are used, how they are arranged, plus transitions, effects, titles, and other editing decisions. It does not embed the media itself, but references the original media files by location on your computer.

The .DMSM file is created when you save or save-as your project in VideoWave. Later you can edit that project by loading the .DMSM file and continue work, tweaking effects, footage placement, etc. When you're ready, you export or "output" the project to actual video files (e.g. MP4, AVI, etc.), or burn it to DVD or Blu-ray. Because .DMSM does not contain the actual video/audio data, if you move the project to another computer or share it, you must also transfer all the referenced media files, preserving the same folder structure.

Technically, .DMSM files begin with an XML-based header. The header shows "version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"" and includes Microsoft schemas-style tags, along with identifiers for production settings, timeline structure, durations, effects, groups, and references to audio/video clip file paths.
