All known file formats using extension .DFA
While DFAddress Data Base is a popular type of DFA-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .DFA file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
DreamForge Video
DreamForge Video (.DFA) is a full-motion video file format used in PC video games developed by DreamForge Intertainment, notably appearing in titles such as Chronomaster and Anvil of Dawn. These files store cinematic cutscenes - animated sequences that play during gameplay to advance plot, set mood, or bridge gameplay segments.
These .DFA files are created by DreamForge Intertainment as part of their game asset pipeline. The format combines video and audio data encoded to play in sync within the game engine rather than for editing or production workflows. Gamers, archivists, or modders who extract these assets from game data often work with .DFA files when exploring or preserving those cinematic elements.
Each DFA file starts with a 128-byte header. The first four bytes are the ASCII signature "DFIA". The header includes version, number of frames, video width and height, frame rate, and the offset where the first video frame begins. Following the header, the file is structured in "chunks" each beginning with a four-character code (FourCC), a size field (excluding the 12-byte chunk preamble), and a chunk type identifier matching the FourCC. Frenquent chunk types include "EOFR", representing empty end-of-frame markers.
