What are DBC files and how to open them

What is a DBC file?

DBC files have multiple uses, and CAN Data Base is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

CAN Data Base

CAN Data Base files contain definitions needed to interpret raw CAN-bus messages. Created in plain text by software that designs or monitors Controller Area Network systems, they map message IDs and bit positions to named "signals" and specify how to convert raw byte data into human-friendly values.

Files define a network of nodes (ECUs) that send and receive messages. Each message (marked by a BO_ keyword) has a numeric CAN ID, length in bytes, and a transmitter node. Within each message are signals (SG_) that occupy specified bits; each signal is given a start bit, length, byte ordering (Intel or Motorola), whether it is signed or unsigned, and linear conversion factors (scale and offset). There may also be units, minimum/maximum ranges, comments, and value-tables assigning human-readable names to specific signal values. Custom metadata attributes can be defined (BA_DEF_), given defaults (BA_DEF_DEF_), and assigned to messages or signals (BA_).

Version identifiers (VERSION), node lists (BU_), bus timing (BS_), and other structural sections precede message and signal definitions. Files often include keywords like FILTER and VAL_, and internal identifiers such as signal-groups. One internal signature at offset 0 is the ASCII string VERSION including quote ("VERSION ").

How to open DBC files

Important: Different programs may use files with the DBC file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your DBC file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While CAN Data Base is a popular type of DBC-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .DBC file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

DBC Communication Database for CAN

The DBC Communication Database for CAN format is a plain-text file format used to define the layout, meaning and rules of communications over a CAN (Controller Area Network) bus. It specifies, in human-readable form, how raw CAN frames are structured: which identifiers carry which messages, which parts of the payload represent which signals, how those signals are scaled into physical values and what units or ranges apply. Its main purpose is to allow tools (software, test systems, ECUs) to decode, validate, simulate or generate CAN traffic consistently.

It is created and maintained using the CANdb or CANdb++ editors by Vector Informatik, or by other tools that support the standard, and read by CAN bus decoding systems, simulators, logging tools, and embedded code generators. The file defines nodes (devices on the network), messages (often called frames) with their ID, length, transmitting node, and signals within those messages. Every signal is described by its bit position, bit length, byte order (endianness), signedness, factor and offset for scaling raw data, its physical minimum and maximum values, units, receivers, and often by comments or descriptions. The file may also include metadata such as version, value tables (enumerations), signal type references, environmental variables, categories, and filtering or grouping constructs. The file is used in automotive development, CAN diagnostics, logging, simulation or firmware generation workflows where consistent interpretation of binary CAN frames is essential. In tools that generate embedded code, each message often becomes a struct in code, with members for its signals, and code uses the definitions to decode incoming frames and encode transmissions.
