DB2 File

What are DB2 files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a DB2 file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your DB2 files.

What is a DB2 file?

A .DB2 file is a World Of Warcraft WDC1 Database file.

The World of Warcraft WDC1 Database format is a file format used by Blizzard's World of Warcraft game to store static client database tables in more recent expansions (Legion and later). These tables include game-data such as items, creatures, spells, maps, talents, and similar content that the game client loads at startup. It is not a saved game or player data format but a compiled database resource created by the game's build process for read-only use by the game client.

Files in this format are written by Blizzard during content generation and officially distributed as part of the game's assets (under the DBFilesClient system). Modding, datamining, or game-tools may read and sometimes write them using community tools or libraries (for example wowlib or DBCD) that rely on schema definitions from WoWDBDefs or similar projects.

Internally, the file begins with the ASCII signature "WDC1" at byte offset zero. The format supports features like sparse or indexed sections, localized string handling, pallets and common blocks for space optimization, copy tables, and encoding of bit-widths. It is one of several "DB2"-style generations (WDC1, WDC3, WDC4, WDC5), each with different layout versions.

Byte signature: "WDC1" at offset 0 identifies this specific generation.
