What are D5P files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a D5P file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your D5P files.

What is a D5P file?

A .D5P file is a Dragon UnPACKer 5 Plugin Package file.

Dragon UnPACKer 5 Plugin Package files are used by Dragon UnPACKer, a tool for exploring and extracting game data from resource archives. These packages auto-install plugins, translations, or updates by running through Duppi, the built-in updater/installer component. Primarily they facilitate extending the core program to support new file types or localizations, or supply newer versions of existing plugins without requiring a full program update.

The packages are created using a companion utility known as the DUP5 Package Maker (sometimes called D5P Maker). That tool lets plugin authors and translation contributors bundle multiple files (drivers, conversion modules, language files) into a single distributable archive, specify metadata like required minimum version of Dragon UnPACKer or Duppi, and enable automatic installation through Duppi. Once installed, the bundled content integrates into the existing Dragon UnPACKer directory structure or language settings.

Internally the package format supports versioning and compression. From version 5.6.0 onward all such packages use "format v4" of D5P, which features block-based structure to allow future extensions, uses strong hash functions (SHA-256 and SHA-512), supports LZMA and/or Zlib compression, and optionally "solid" compression (good compression when many small files are included together) for better size efficiency.

Files in this format begin with a four-byte ASCII signature DUPP (hex 44 55 50 50) followed by a 1A byte at offset zero to identify them uniquely.
