CZIP File

What are CZIP files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a CZIP file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your CZIP files.

What is a CZIP file?

A .CZIP file is a ZipGenius Encrypted Compressed Archive file.

ZipGenius Encrypted Compressed Archive files are secure versions of standard ZIP archives, created by the Windows program ZipGenius. They package one or more files into a ZIP archive and then encrypt that archive to protect its contents with stronger mechanisms than typical ZIP password protection. This format is used when confidentiality of file contents matters, such as for personal documents, backups, or files transmitted over insecure channels.

The format is produced when an existing ZIP file is "wrapped" into an encrypted container by ZipGenius using any of several encryption algorithms. Creation options include setting a passphrase (or numeric key in the case of the proprietary CZIP algorithm), embedding optional metadata such as author name or email, and choosing special behaviors: standard (no penalty for wrong password), self-locking (archive locks after three failed tries), or self-erasing (archive destroys its internal data after three failed tries). ZipGenius can convert the encrypted archive into a stand-alone executable so that users without ZipGenius can decrypt it if they supply the correct passphrase.

Encryption is available under four different algorithms: the native CZIP algorithm (a custom byte-by-byte method), Blowfish (128-bit), Twofish, or Rijndael (AES-256). The implementation labeled CZIP 2.1 enhances the format's header so that password or key correctness can be determined quickly without decrypting the entire archive, and it stores the optional metadata. Standard ZIP compression techniques are used for the inner archive. Only ZipGenius version 1.4 or later, or other programs that specifically support the CZIP format, can read these files.

Files begin with the ASCII header CZIP (hex 43 5A 49 50) at the very start of the file.

How to open CZIP files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CZIP file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CZIP file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested two different CZIP openers which you will find listed below.
