What is a CS1 file?

A .CS1 file is a Camera RAW Image File (Capture Shop) file.

Camera RAW Image File (Capture Shop) files (.CS1) are raw image files produced by Sinar's CaptureShop software as part of its "1-shot" mode operation with Sinar backs (digital camera backs), especially for high resolution imaging. These files store the image data directly as captured by the sensor, with minimal processing applied. The format is intended for professionals and advanced users who require maximum flexibility for color correction, exposure adjustment, and other image development tasks before final output.

CaptureShop software writes .CS1 files during a single exposure (1-shot) session using Sinar digital backs or backs compatible with Sinar CaptureShop. After capture, users load these files into CaptureShop to view, adjust, and export them - commonly converting to formats like TIFF or RAW/DNG for further work. Although CaptureShop has been replaced in some workflows by newer software such as CaptureFlow, CS1 remains the archival raw image format tied to CaptureShop's "1-shot" mode.

Internally, CS1 is a proprietary uncompressed binary format. It records raw sensor output, allowing for later manipulation of white balance, exposure, color tones, and other raw parameters. The files are created sequentially during shooting (e.g. naming like FIRST_SET010.CS1, FIRST_SET011.CS1, etc., for successive 1-shots). CaptureShop was historically provided with Sinar backs like the Sinarback eVolution, including with configuration for tethered capture or direct download from internal memory.
