CRH File

What are CRH files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a CRH file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your CRH files.

What is a CRH file?

A .CRH file is a Links 386 Pro / Microsoft Golf Course file.

Links 386 Pro / Microsoft Golf Course files store data for complete golf courses used by Links 386 Pro and its Microsoft Golf versions. These files contain terrain layouts, textures for land types (sand, rough, fairway, etc.), views (top, green, panorama), object placements, and color palettes. These serve to define how each hole looks - not player stats, saved games, or general settings.

Course files are written by the course-design tools included with Links 386 Pro / Microsoft Golf, or by their official add-on/course expansion packs. Game or conversion utilities within those products read these files to render the course during gameplay. When a course created for an earlier Links game (in .CRS form) is converted for use in Links 386 Pro, the resulting file is in this exact course format.

Files in this format begin with the ASCII signature "MDmd" at offset zero, have a 7A000000 four-byte sequence at offset six, and at offset forty-two include the string "~INDEX~" followed by many spaces. They also contain internal resource filenames like PALETTE.COL, TOPVIEW.DAT, COURSE.HDR, and others (e.g. HRFLAG.BLK, SAND.CEL, OBJ00.BLK) that identify palette files, view data, header info, terrain textures, and object-block graphics.
