COORDS File
What are COORDS files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a COORDS file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your COORDS files.
What is a COORDS file?
A .COORDS file is a Wildfire Benoit Coordinates file.
Wildfire Benoit Coordinates is a text-based file format used by fractal generation or fractal renderer software produced by Wildfire Benoit (commercially from vendor wk-artworks) to store the full set of parameters needed to define and reproduce a fractal image. It holds settings such as the type of fractal formula (e.g. Mandelbrot, Julia), iteration limits, exponent, seed coordinates for generation (X SEED, Y SEED), bounds of the rendered region (X MIN, X MAX, Y MIN, Y MAX), color settings like even/odd colors, style, and repeat/color repetition options.
These files are created by Wildfire Benoit's fractal application when a user saves a fractal definition or configuration so that it can be loaded later to render the same fractal, possibly with exact detail and color attributes preserved. They are not image bitmaps but instruction files: when opened in the same software, the fractal view can be recalculated from these parameters rather than being stored as pixels. Versions include internal versioning markers (e.g. "Benoit.Version: 1") to allow forward compatibility.
Text signatures are used to identify this format: each file begins at offset 0 with the ASCII line "#Benoit.Version:1.Fractaltype:" (or similar) and the body of the file contains key-value labels such as MAX ITER, FORMULA, EXPONENT, COLOR REPEAT, STYLE, X SEED, Y SEED, X MIN, X MAX, Y MIN, Y MAX, EVEN COLOR, ODD COLOR. These labels enable both humans and the software to parse and reconstruct the fractal settings.
How to open COORDS files
Important: Different programs may use files with the COORDS file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your COORDS file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
We have not yet verified any programs for Windows that work with this specific file format. If you know one, please use the 'Suggest a program' link below. Thanks!
