What are COLOR files and how to open them

What is a COLOR file?

A .COLOR file is a Montage Color Data file.

Montage Color Data files store color information created by the Amiga video titling application Montage. They define how text, shapes, and backgrounds in Montage's title layouts are colored, including gradient, shadow, and transparency settings used in those layouts.

These files are produced by the Montage video titler software, which designs and sequences title pages (layouts combining text and graphics) intended for live video overlay or broadcast-style titling. Montage writes color data files to capture the specific color attributes (such as RGB values, gradients, spreads) that will be applied when rendering or displaying those title pages.

The format begins with a fixed ASCII identifier at the very start of the file: the bytes "/COLOR_" at offset 0. It also embeds human-readable color component names like "GREEN" and "BLUE," which indicates color names are stored internally. The file extension used is "color", sometimes "COLOR1" in older versions.

How to open COLOR files

Important: Different programs may use files with the COLOR file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your COLOR file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
