- The quick facts

What are CMAP files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a CMAP file or just wondering what they contain? We explain what these files are used for and show you software that we know can open or otherwise handle your files.

What is a CMAP file?

Files that contain the .cmap file extension are most commonly used by the C-map MAX Cartography Catalog software. The C-map Max Cartography Catalog program is used to create nautical map charts. The charts that are created with this software are then stored with the .cmap file extension.

The .cmap file suffix is also used by the IHMC CmapTools software application. This program is used to create mind-map diagrams for use during the brainstorming process. The brainstorming diagrams that are created with the software are saved with the .cmap file suffix.

The .cmap file suffix is also used for colormap files. This file format is based on the OFF file format. The CMAP files normally have a corresponding OFF file associated with them.
