What are CKF files and how to open them

What is a CKF file?

A .CKF file is a Casio Keyboard file.

Casio Keyboard File format stores configuration, sound, and performance data used by Casio electronic keyboards and the software support tools that manage them. It bundles together one or more pieces of user or factory data - such as rhythm patterns, tones, songs, registrations, wave-based drum or tone samples, drawbar organ voices, DSP settings, or complete backups - into a single file that can be distributed, imported, or restored. The format is meant for transferring between a computer (via Casio's Music Data Management or Data Manager software) and Casio keyboard memory, or for restoring factory defaults.

These files are created and published by Casio (for example via their Casio Music Site or bundled with keyboard hardware) as generic "distribution" files. On downloading or copying to a computer, one uses Casio's data management application to send the contents into a keyboard's user memory or to extract specific elements onto the computer. When data in a Casio Keyboard File is loaded into a keyboard, parts of it may convert into model-specific internal file types (for example rhythm files in older models becoming "Z00" format, newer ones "AC7").

Each file begins with a signature identifying it as belonging to Casio's Music Library format. At offset 0, the ASCII string "CASIOMusicLib" followed by "LIB" and a null byte marks the file; an additional byte (0x11) occurs at offset 20. This helps tools and equipment recognize the file type before further parsing.

How to open CKF files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CKF file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CKF file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
