What are CK6 files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a CK6 file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your CK6 files.

What is a CK6 file?

A .CK6 file is a Commander Keen 6 Config file.

Commander Keen 6 config is a configuration and saved-settings file used by the DOS game Commander Keen: Aliens Ate My Babysitter (also called Commander Keen 6), developed by id Software and released in December 1991. It stores the game's configuration options (such as display, sound, control settings) and high score data, loaded at game startup and written when the game exits properly.

This format is produced by the game itself. When the player makes changes to settings (for example key bindings, sound/music volume, graphics mode) or earns a high score, those changes are saved into the configuration file so that future sessions start with the chosen preferences and stored high scores. The game reads the file at launch to restore settings.

Files begin with the ASCII‐signature "CK6" followed by a zero byte at file offset 0.
