What are CINEMA4D files and how to open them

What is a CINEMA4D file?

A .CINEMA4D file is a Cinema 4D Project file.

Cinema 4D Project files are the native scene files created by Maxon's Cinema 4D software to store all elements of a 3D project. These include geometry, cameras, lights, materials, textures, animations, object hierarchies, scene settings, and other essential information needed to open, edit, render or share the project within Cinema 4D. They are used whenever a user saves a Cinema 4D scene, typically via the program's "Save Project" or "Save Project As" commands.

The format is designed to store a complete Cinema 4D project in one file. External assets such as image textures, sound files, caches or other referenced media are not embedded in the project file by default. To archive or share the full scene including these external dependencies, Cinema 4D offers a "Save Project Including Assets" option. Different "Takes" (variant versions of the scene camera/lights/materials) can be saved either together ("Save all Takes Including Assets") or selectively.

Internally, the file format uses an IFF-based (Interchange File Format) chunked structure so that the file is organized into sections (chunks) each with an identifier, a size, and then data. This allows parsers to skip over chunks they do not understand. The file begins with a 12-byte header: 4 bytes "FORM" (identifying it as IFF), 4 bytes indicating the file size, and 4 bytes "MC4D" identifying it as a Cinema 4D file. Following the header are optional chunks such as "PLTF" (platform info), "MAT4" (materials), "OBJ5" (objects), "UMG4" (editor view settings), etc. All multi-byte values are stored in big-endian order.

How to open CINEMA4D files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CINEMA4D file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CINEMA4D file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
