What are CHR0 files and how to open them

What is a CHR0 file?

A .CHR0 file is a Wii Model Animation file.

Wii Model Animation files store animation data for character models - how bones move, rotate and scale over time. These files are created as part of a Wii game's resource archive (often within BRRES files) and define specific motions used by the game engine to animate models. Common uses include character action sequences, movement loops, or model transformations during gameplay.

Such animation files are produced when developers design movement for a model's skeleton ("bone animation"). The game at run-time reads this animation data, applies it to bones defined elsewhere (for example in a separate model file), and interpolates between keyframes to create smooth motion. They do not themselves include meshes, textures or the static shape of models - that comes from model-format files.

These files begin with the ASCII signature "CHR0" at offset 0, which identifies the file type. They include data such as frame count, per-bone animation blocks, and flags encoding which transformations are present (translation, rotation, scale) and whether they are fixed or interpolated.

How to open CHR0 files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CHR0 file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CHR0 file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
