What are CHPROJ files and how to open them

What is a CHPROJ file?

A .CHPROJ file is an Adobe Character Animator Project file.

The Adobe Character Animator Project file holds the outline of an animation project created in Adobe Character Animator, meant for organizing scenes, character puppets, and references to media such as artwork, audio, and recordings. It serves as the central project entry so that the program knows what scenes exist in the project, which puppets are used, how things are rigged, which files are where, and how they relate - but it does not itself contain the heavy media files.

A project is produced by Adobe Character Animator when using its File → New Project command, which creates a project folder with the project file and supporting folders. Working involves importing media (e.g. artwork, audio) into the project; editing puppets and creating scenes; and then saving all that. The media content - graphics, audio, puppet details - lives in two subfolders alongside the project file: one called "Ch Media" (for imported or gathered artwork and sound) and one called "Ch Data" (project state, scene data, rigging, performance takes etc.). Without the accompanying Ch Media and Ch Data folders, the project cannot function fully. The project file often appears with a size of zero bytes because it mainly serves as an anchor or reference, while the real content is in the subfolders.

Internally, the project file shows XML and Apple property list elements, such as PLIST and DOCTYPE tags, along with identifiers like CHPROJECTINDEXNAME, CHPROJECTVARIABLES, CHPROJECTBOOKMARK, etc. It begins with a header indicating XML version 1.0 and UTF-8 encoding.

How to open CHPROJ files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CHPROJ file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CHPROJ file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
