What are CHO files and how to open them

What is a CHO file?

A .CHO file is a Playmation Chor Data file.

Playmation Chor Data files are choreography scripts produced by the Direction module of Will Vinton's Playmation software on the Amiga. They contain key-frame-based definitions of camera motions, light placements, figure placements, target points and scene direction. Each choreography file links to figure files (and optionally to motion files "Action") and defines how characters, lights, camera etc. move over time.

These files are written in ASCII text, so scene timing, objects, motions are readable and editable in a text editor. They do not store raw mesh geometry themselves - that is carried in segment or figure files. Choreograph files allow animators to assemble characters, motion paths, light sources and camera perspectives into a complete animated scene that can later be rendered.

Files begin with the ASCII signature "CHOR " at byte offset zero. The content also includes keywords such as CAMERA, TARGET, LIGHT, and .FIG to mark linked figures. These signatures and identifiers distinguish it from other file types.

How to open CHO files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CHO file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CHO file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
