What are CGG files and how to open them

What is a CGG file?

A .CGG file is a Cricket Graph Graph file.

Cricket Graph Graph files store the data and layout of a chart created by CA-Cricket Graph or Cricket Graph III for Macintosh. These files capture both the tabular data entered into Cricket's spreadsheet-style interface and the settings that define how the chart should look - such as chart type (bar, pie, line, scatter), axis labels, title, styles, fonts, error bars, and curve fittings.

Cricket Graph is software from the 1980s-1990s made by Cricket Software (later acquired by Computer Associates). It provides a simple data window to enter values (manually or by importing text files), tools to apply functions and smoothing to columns, then generates 2-D charts from chosen rows or columns. Charts can be further styled and exported in common graphic formats like PICT or EPS. The Graph files are the internal native format used by Cricket Graph to save work-in-progress charts.

Internally, the format is binary and begins with a specific signature string. It starts with the four bytes 0x64 00 47 47 at offset zero, which in ASCII correspond to "d.GG".

How to open CGG files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CGG file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CGG file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
