What are CEG files and how to open them

What is a CEG file?

A .CEG file is a Continuous Edge Graphic Bitmap file.

Continuous Edge Graphic Bitmap is an image file format used by Edsun for storing raster graphics. It was developed for Edsun's Continuous Edge Graphic tools to hold bitmap images with support for palette data and modes intended to improve visual smoothness. The format embeds image dimensions, color palette information, and versioning data so applications designed for Continuous Edge Graphic can load and display the image with the correct settings.

Files are created by Edsun's Continuous Edge Graphic software; typical use includes storing graphics that make use of VGA-compatible modes and palettes, possibly for display on hardware or in environments where palette manipulation or VGA-style rendering is relevant. Images are read by the same software or compatible tools that can interpret Edsun-format raster graphics.

Header data begins with a version number followed by an ASCII ID string "Edsun CEG", then fields including number of pixels per byte, reserved space, ASCII-zero-terminated copyright notice, revision number, mode value, image width and height (lines), VGA-mode information, VGA register data, and a palette of up to 256 colors (each RGB value). Creation timestamp fields (year, day, month, hour, minute, second) are also stored. A byte at offset 0x65 holds the CEG revision (value 1), and the ASCII signature "Edsun CEG" appears at offset 2.

How to open CEG files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CEG file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CEG file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
