What are CBMPRJ files and how to open them

What is a CBMPRJ file?

A .CBMPRJ file is a CBM Prg Studio Project file.

CBM Prg Studio Project files store all the settings and resource links for a software project managed by CBM prg Studio, an integrated development environment for creating BASIC or machine-code programs for Commodore 8-bit systems. They capture which source, sprite, character, screen and other asset files are part of the project, plus build options, target output type (for example PRG or cartridge formats), and commands to run before or after building.

These files are written by CBM prg Studio itself when a user creates or edits a project using that IDE. Developers use the IDE to write code, assemble, edit graphics or sprites, and when ready, the project definition file guides the build process toward a final executable or cartridge image as configured. The project file is read by CBM prg Studio each time the project is opened or built, so that all files and settings remain consistent.

Internally the project file is an XML document that begins with an XML declaration including version, encoding UTF-8 and a DO NOT EDIT warning. It contains tags and fields such as SOURCEFILES, FILESGLOBAL, PROJECT TARGET, PREBUILDENABLED, POSTBUILDENABLED, CRTBUILDINGCARTRIDGE, CRTCARTTYPE, STARTADDRESS, BUILDORDER, AUTOLAUNCHNAME and various others. These identify what the project builds, in which order, what output file type, and whether pre- or post-build scripts are run.

How to open CBMPRJ files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CBMPRJ file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CBMPRJ file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
