What is a CBCX file?

A .CBCX file is a Comic Book Creator Document file.

Comic Book Creator Document files store comic‐book projects created in the Comic Book Creator software by Planetwide Media. They capture the layout of comic pages, panels, images and text elements so creators can edit, preview, export or publish their comics over time.

These documents are saved when a project in Comic Book Creator is being worked on but not yet published or exported. They preserve content such as image file references, panel borders, speech bubbles, text boxes, style settings, page sizes, margins, and metadata including author, title, keywords, and creation or modification dates. The format is primarily intended for editing and arranging comic content before final output to formats like PDF or image files.

The file contents are structured in XML. They begin with an XML declaration and contain document type declarations (including "DOCTYPE") referencing a DTD (such as "CBC.DTD"). Inside are multiple tags that name panels, balloons, bitmap files, positioning, page IDs, styles, and other layout information like margins and paper size. These tags work together to define where images and text go.

A CBCX file begins with the ASCII XML signature ("<?xml ") at byte offset zero, and contains strings such as "COMIC BOOK CR", "PAGE ID", "BITMAPFILE", "PANEL", "STYLE", "MARGIN", "BOOK ID", "KEYWORDS", "ATTRIBUTES" like "AUTHOR", "TITLE", "OFFSET", "BACK" and "METRIC" among others, which serve as internal keywords identifying parts of layout, content and metadata within the XML document.
