What are CASETEMPLATE files and how to open them

What is a CASETEMPLATE file?

A .CASETEMPLATE file is an EnCase Case Template file.

EnCase Case Template files are used by EnCase Forensic to predefine settings and layout for new investigations. A case template bundles default metadata fields, report structure, bookmarks folders, notes sections, and tag names so that each new case starts with consistent setup. It helps enforce standards in how case information, reports, and findings are organized.

These template files are created by first building or configuring a case in EnCase - defining case information items (name-value pairs), organizing bookmark folders and notes, selecting or designing report templates - and then saving that case as a template. EnCase writes these into a Templates folder, where they become selectable when creating new cases. They are read when a user selects a template to base a new case on; they are not evidence or image files themselves.

Case Template files have a characteristic internal signature: the first bytes are 0x45 0x6E 0x46 0x09 0x0D 0x0A 0xFF 0x00 0x43 0x41 0x53 0x45 at offset zero (which reads as ASCII "EnF…..CASE"), and somewhere in the content is the string "T'E'M'P'L'A'T'E".

How to open CASETEMPLATE files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CASETEMPLATE file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CASETEMPLATE file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
