What is a CAKEWALKSTUDIOWARE file?

A .CAKEWALKSTUDIOWARE file is a Cakewalk Studio Ware Panel file.

Cakewalk Studio Ware Panel files store the layout and behavior definitions of custom graphical control panels made within the Cakewalk (Sonar / Pro Audio) digital audio workstation. These panels mimic MIDI-hardware controls (knobs, faders, buttons, clusters) and are used to send MIDI or MIDI SysEx messages to external devices or software, to automate controllers, or to record those control movements. These panel files are created, edited, and saved using Cakewalk's StudioWare feature.

A panel includes widgets arranged in a workspace, each with properties specifying appearance (size, style, graphics), operation (which MIDI port or MIDI instrument it commands), interaction (knobs, sliders, toggle buttons), alias-variables, and optional recording of control movements into MIDI tracks. Some panels support password protection, embedded credits, and bitmap graphics for enhanced visuals; bitmap use can be disabled to improve display performance.

Files are saved with a dedicated filename extension and may either be stored separately or embedded within project, template, or bundle files in Cakewalk. When a project containing a saved panel is opened, the panel opens automatically; standalone panels can be opened via File-Open using the StudioWare file type filter.

Technical identifiers include a signature at the start of the file: a specific set of bytes beginning with 0x20987794BBF9CF11… at offset 0, another signature at offset 37, and presence of the ASCII string "FNCZ" somewhere in the file.
