What are BVY files and how to open them

What is a BVY file?

A .BVY file is a Breevy Text Snippet file.

Breevy Text Snippet files store the collections of user-defined abbreviations (short codes) and their matching replacement texts (phrases, snippets) as used by Breevy, a text expansion and AutoText/AutoCorrect utility for Windows. These files represent Breevy's internal snippet database: each snippet record pairs what a user types (an abbreviation or keystroke trigger) with what Breevy replaces it with, along with any settings related to trigger behavior, case matching, or where the snippet is active.

These files are created and maintained by Breevy (16 Software). When a user adds, edits, or deletes snippets in Breevy's interface, those changes are saved into a Text Snippet file. Breevy also provides import/export functionality with other snippet formats (for example TextExpander) and can synchronize snippet files across computers using cloud services like Dropbox. The snippets saved here are later read by Breevy when it is running, so that the expansion behavior (replacement, auto-correct, launching apps, etc.) can take effect in any application where Breevy is active.

Within Breevy's distribution and its user's data folders, there are sample snippet files named things like "Medical Transcription.bvy", "Typo AutoCorrections.bvy", and "abbreviations.bvy", confirming that snippet sets are saved using this file type.

Text signature analysis identifies these files by the ASCII header or byte signature: at offset zero the file begins with the sequence bytes 0x3C427265657679206E3D22 which corresponds in ASCII to "<Breevy n=" which indicates the start of a "Breevy"-tagged snippet name or parameter.

How to open BVY files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BVY file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BVY file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
