What are BTX files and how to open them

What is a BTX file?

A .BTX file is a DB/TextWorks Database Term And Word Index file.

DB/TextWorks Database Term And Word Index format stores the search indexing data of a DB/TextWorks "textbase," a database‐and‐text-retrieval system from Inmagic. It holds the internal "Term" and "Word" indexes that DB/TextWorks builds so that full-text search, term-based querying, word-or-phrase lookups, sorting, and filtering over the database fields works efficiently. These indexes map individual words or terms used in records to a structure that speeds up search operations.

This format is produced by DB/TextWorks when indexing its records. It is paired with an "Occ" file (extension .OCC) which lists which records in the textbase contain each indexed term or word. When DB/TextWorks queries for a term or does word searches, it uses data in the index file plus the record lists in the OCC component. The indexes support features like term browsing, word proximity and range searches. The file is one of several that share the same textbase name but different extensions, alongside files holding record data, directory information, field definitions, etc.

The format is binary. It begins with an ASCII header signature containing "BTX 005 " at the start of the file.

How to open BTX files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BTX file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BTX file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
