What are BTN files and how to open them

What is a BTN file?

A .BTN file is a Just Buttons Format file.

Just Buttons animated bitmap image files are graphic assets created by JustButtons, a Windows application made by Lincoln Beach Software. A file in this format holds one or more frames of a bitmap graphic along with style, layout, animation or interaction settings. These are commonly used when designing custom buttons or interactive graphics - for example in web pages or presentations - and integrating things like hover or click effects in a visual editor.

Such files are written and edited by JustButtons; the program saves both the raw image data (the bitmaps themselves) and metadata controlling how the button looks (such as fonts, colors, shadows, outlines) and behaves (animation states, effects) for interactive use. The assets are binary, proprietary, and generally cannot be created or fully edited outside JustButtons. Some third-party tools, like XnView, offer viewing or conversion capabilities, but full fidelity of styling or interactivity may be lost.

Internally the format is identified by a unique signature starting with a 4-byte value 0x02000000 at the beginning, followed by various UTF-8/ASCII strings used for naming and property descriptors. These include keywords like BTN_FILL_STYLE, BUTTON_TEXT_0_FONT_SIZE, BTN_SHAPE, BTN_SHADOW_COLOR, BTN_OUTLINE_WIDTH, and others, which label layout, text styling, fill gradients, shadows, and more.

How to open BTN files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BTN file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BTN file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
