What are BT2 files and how to open them

What is a BT2 file?

A .BT2 file is a West Mountain Radio CBA Test file.

West Mountain Radio CBA Test files are used by the CBA ("Computerized Battery Analyzer") software made by West Mountain Radio. These files save completed battery test results including voltage versus charges, capacity, test settings (such as battery chemistry, capacity rating, cutoff voltage), test name and dates. They are intended for viewing, overlaying and comparing multiple tests graphically. The content is saved in a proprietary binary format that supports version-2 (.bt2) features including multiple overlayed tests within a single file.

The CBA software produces these files. Users run a test (for example, "discharge", "power profile", or "constant resistance"), and when the test finishes, the software writes the results into a .bt2 file. The GUI version of the software can open these files, overlay several tests, export data to CSV for external processing, and convert older style version 1 (.bt1) test files into version-2 files automatically upon saving.

Files saved with version 2 store more advanced information than those in version 1. They uniquely record graphs of voltage against Amp-hours (and sometimes watts), battery test metadata (name, battery type, number of cells, chemistry, cutoff voltage, optional temperature measurements), and allow multiple tests to be stored in a single file. When old .bt1 files are opened in version 2, saving them updates their format to include version-2 fields.

A command-line or hands-free mode exists in which tests can be run with switches like "/open filename.bt2", "/title", "/temperature", "/graph", etc. In that mode, once the test completes, the program writes to the .bt2 file named in the open command. The graphing mode can be specified (such as showing voltage vs amp-hours, watt-hours, or other units) and additional metadata such as temperature cutoffs or amplifier settings are also included.

How to open BT2 files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BT2 file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BT2 file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
