What are BSSC files and how to open them

What is a BSSC file?

A .BSSC file is a BSSC Compressed Data file.

BSSC Compressed Data format holds files produced by a compressor named BSSC, written by Sergeo Sizikov, for lossless data compression using block-sorting and related filters. It is used for reducing file size in general-purpose data (text, binaries) rather than for a specific application type. The main program that writes these files is the BSSC compressor/decompressor utility. When data is compressed with BSSC, it arranges input into blocks, applies filters and transforms (such as delta, LZP, Burrows-Wheeler transform or Shindler's variant, run-length encoding, distance + entropy coding), then outputs a compact representation. Decompression reverses all these stages using the same settings stored in the file header.

Files begin with an ASCII signature "BSSC_V" at the start, to identify them unambiguously.

How to open BSSC files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BSSC file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BSSC file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
