What is a BREFF file?

A .BREFF file is a Wii Effect Controls file.

Wii Effect Controls files (extension .BREFF) store control or behavior information for visual effects in certain Nintendo Wii games. These files are paired with corresponding .BREFT files and together they define both the appearance and dynamics of effects such as smoke, fire, explosions, or visual trails in tracks or game environments.

The .BREFF file is created by the game and is edited using tools like BrawlBox. Gamers and modders often modify BREFF files to change colours, intensity, behaviour or other properties of visual effects; the game engine reads them at runtime alongside the .BREFT file, which contains the graphics and texture data. These files are normally found in an "effect" folder within the game's file hierarchy.

Internally, the file begins with a 16-byte header. The first four bytes are the ASCII signature "REFF", followed by a byte-order mark (always 0xFEFF), a version number (in Mario Kart Wii this is 9), the file's length in bytes, the size of the header, and the number of data blocks (typically one).
