BRC File
What are BRC files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a BRC file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your BRC files.
What is a BRC file?
A .BRC file is a BlueCielo Meridian BriefCase - File Archive Library file.
BlueCielo Meridian's BriefCase File Archive Library is created by the BlueCielo Meridian Enterprise document management system. It packages one or more documents together with their metadata and properties so they can be sent, stored, or revised outside the Meridian vault, but still retain information like document version, comments, status and metadata. Such a package is used to work offline, transmit revisions, or exchange document sets safely while preserving context.
These archive files are generated using Meridian's Briefcase feature. They may include native document files, revisions, renditions, thumbnails, redlines, and document property data. The files inside may be locked (checked out) or unlocked depending on how the Briefcase was produced. Once the external work or review is complete, the contents can be imported back into Meridian, which reinstates metadata, handles revisions, and updates the vault copies. System administrators can configure templates so that metadata may be stored in XML, Microsoft Access, or Excel formats inside the archive, or use open standard container formats like ZIP or RAR instead of the proprietary format.
The proprietary library format uses the "BRC" format, sometimes called the BlueCielo BRC format. It includes features unique to Meridian like storing redlines in the archive and locking documents (checking out) when needed. Briefcase import and export functions (including via Project Portal and the Global Collaboration Framework) allow transfer of these archive files between sites or for remote work.
In its internal layout the format is identified by specific signatures. At offset 0 is the ASCII sequence "FAL100" (bytes 46 41 4C 31 30 30 1A 00). At offset 96 appears "PRFF203". The file also contains the strings VERSION'100 and BRCHEADER among its contents.
