BPG File

What are BPG files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a BPG file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your BPG files.

What is a BPG file?

BPG files have multiple uses, and Better Portable Graphics bitmap is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Better Portable Graphics bitmap

These BPG files are image formats used to replace JPEG files. BPG is used when JPEG gives quality or size issues. It has high compression speeds, most web browsers support it, and it supports lossless compression.

How to open BPG files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BPG file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BPG file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested five different BPG openers which you will find listed below.

All known file formats using extension .BPG

While Better Portable Graphics bitmap is a popular type of BPG-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .BPG file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Borland Project Group

The Borland Project Group format (extension .bpg) is a text-based project grouping file used in older versions of Delphi (up to Delphi 7 and earlier). It allows developers to group multiple individual projects together - such as applications, libraries, or modules - that work together as a single unit. The project group file helps organize related projects so that they can be opened, built, and managed together within the Delphi IDE's Project Manager.

Each .bpg file is created and maintained by Embarcadero Delphi (originally Borland). When you use the Delphi IDE to save a project group, it writes this file. It doesn't compile code itself - instead it records which sub-projects belong to the group, their order, file paths, project options, and dependencies. When you build or open the group in the IDE, Delphi reads the .bpg file to reconstruct the group structure so you can jump between projects and compile them as related pieces.

Inside the file, content resembles a makefile style syntax. It typically begins with a long ASCII line of hyphens ("#------------------------------------------------------------------------------") and includes keywords and macros such as VERSION, DEFAULT, and root or make directories (for example, variables like ROOT and MAKEDIR). It may reference project tools like MAKE.EXE, DCC32.EXE, or BRCC32.EXE. These strings appear in the byte signatures recorded for this format.

BPG opener for Windows

We have identified one BPG opener that is compatible with this specific type of BPG file.

Various apps that use files with this extension

These apps are known to open certain types of BPG files. Remember, different programs may use BPG files for different purposes, so you may need to try out a few of them to be able to open your specific file.
