BOM File
What are BOM files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a BOM file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your BOM files.
What is a BOM file?
BOM files have multiple uses, and MacOS Bill of Materials is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
MacOS Bill of Materials
The macOS Installer program uses Bill of Materials files to document the destination folders of files in an installer bundle. Not only that, but it also, among other things, specifies what their file permissions must be.
Thus, the installer reads a Bill of Materials, and the MacOS Archive Utility helps it by extracting the files specified in the BOM.
How to open BOM files
Important: Different programs may use files with the BOM file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BOM file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested three different BOM openers which you will find listed below.

All known file formats using extension .BOM
While MacOS Bill of Materials is a popular type of BOM-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .BOM file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
Pro/ENGINEER Temporary File
The .bom file extension is most commonly used by the Pro/ENGINEER 3-D production design software application. The BOM files used by this software are temporary files.
These files are created when the application cannot allocate sufficient memory to perform necessary tasks. When the application is done with the BOM file, the file is usually deleted automatically.
Various apps that use files with this extension
These apps are known to open certain types of BOM files. Remember, different programs may use BOM files for different purposes, so you may need to try out a few of them to be able to open your specific file.
