What are BKR files and how to open them

What is a BKR file?

A .BKR file is a ReplaceEm Fileset file.

ReplaceEm Fileset format is a script-style text file used by the ReplaceEm utility (originally "BK ReplaceEm" by Custom Fit Software). It defines which files should be processed together and what search-and-replace operations should be performed on them. The ReplaceEm program reads a fileset file to apply a batch of string substitutions across one or more files or entire directories, supporting features like backup handling, exact-match vs case-insensitive searches, and inclusion of files of different types.

When creating a ReplaceEm fileset, one configures groups ("replace groups") mapping specific search strings to replacement strings. The fileset file also lists which files belong to which groups. It is possible to run ReplaceEm from the command line by supplying a fileset, with options (for example "/s" to start immediately, "/x" to exit after running) to control behaviour.

Files begin with ASCII text; among the first bytes is the word Version followed by a version number. The file contains recognizable markers like BEGIN_GROUP_BACKUP, GROUP_START, and fields labelled VERSION. These internal keywords help the ReplaceEm program parse groups of replacements and the files associated with them.

How to open BKR files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BKR file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BKR file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
