What are BINARYCOOKIES files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a BINARYCOOKIES file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your BINARYCOOKIES files.

What is a BINARYCOOKIES file?

A .BINARYCOOKIES file is a Safari Cookies file.

Safari Cookies files are used by Apple's WebKit-based software on macOS and iOS - most notably the Safari browser - to store HTTP cookies persistently. These files keep sites' cookie information (such as login tokens, preferences, and domain/path/expiry data) so that browsing sessions and website settings persist across uses.

These files are produced by Safari itself or by iOS/macOS applications that use WebKit web views. They are read by the browser or embedded web views to retrieve existing cookies when accessing a site and to update or delete cookies as needed. Developers or forensic tools may parse them to extract cookie details like the name, value, domain, path, creation date, expiration date, secure flag, and HTTP-only flag.

Internally, the file is structured in pages. The header begins with a file signature followed by a count of pages; each page contains a table of cookies with offsets pointing to records holding the cookie strings, timestamps, and flags. Timestamps are stored in floating-point seconds since Apple's "Mac epoch" (January 1, 2001) and cookie properties include flags indicating "secure" and "HTTP-only". The file ends with an 8-byte checksum and may include a trailing property list ("bplist00") containing additional metadata like cookie accept policy. The file's byte signature at offset zero is the ASCII characters "cook".
