What are BIMX files and how to open them

What is a BIMX file?

A .BIMX file is a BIMx 3D Scene file.

BIMx 3D Scene format supports interactive 3-dimensional Building Information Models bundled with linked 2-dimensional documentation for viewing and presentation. Originating from Graphisoft's Archicad, it enables architects to export a so-called "hyper-model" that includes the 3D model, layouts (floor plans, sections, elevations), camera views, paths, metadata, and navigational features. This format is intended for sharing, exploring, and presenting building designs, rather than for editing or design development.

Files are produced by Archicad using its publisher system or the BIMx Hyper-Model Wizard. They are meant to be opened with viewer applications such as Graphisoft's BIMx Viewer on desktop or mobile platforms, or through a Web Viewer. Viewing features include game-style navigation (walk or fly modes), hyperlinked 2D/3D content (selecting part of the 3D model opens corresponding 2D drawings), measurement tools, custom layer visibility control, textures and shadows, configurable render modes, and optimizations for mobile performance. Hyper-models serve for client reviews, site walkthroughs, and project communication.

The format is read-only: once exported from Archicad, it cannot be imported back into Archicad or edited in full BIM authoring tools. For collaborative or design authoring workflows, formats like Archicad's native project files or IFC are used instead.

Signature bytes indicate the file begins with ASCII "BIMx" (bytes 0x42 49 4D 78) at offset 0.

How to open BIMX files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BIMX file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BIMX file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
