What is a BG file?

2D Fighter Maker 95 BG Data

2D Fighter Maker 95 BG Data is a file format used by the software 2D Fighter Maker 95 to store background graphics and layout information for stages and fighting arenas. It is created by the 2D Fighter Maker 95 program and is essential for defining how backgrounds appear during gameplay, including which graphics are used and where they are positioned. These files are neither standard image bitmaps nor audio - they belong to the internal asset files of the program.

Files in this format are produced by the editor component of 2D Fighter Maker 95 when a user designs or imports a background ("stage") and places graphical elements. The program reads these files during playtesting or in-built runtime to render the background, handling features like tile positioning, layering, and possibly simple animations. Backgrounds created this way usually depend on accompanying graphic asset files and metadata defined elsewhere in the game's resource directories.

The format is identified by its header and internal signatures: the first few bytes are ASCII-text "2DKGT95" at offset zero, another signature appears at offset 28 as ".u.a.f", and the string ".MID" is present somewhere in the data. These signatures allow tools or file viewers to recognize files as BG Data from 2D Fighter Maker 95.

PrintFox/Pagefox Bitmap

PrintFox/Pagefox Bitmap files store full‐page raster graphics produced by the Printfox or Pagefox software running on the Commodore 64 or C128. These graphics represent combined text and image layouts "printed" into a high - resolution bitmap with a native resolution of 640×400 pixels; graphics editing, image import, and layout features are supported within Printfox before the output is saved.

These files are created when a user in Printfox or Pagefox saves the page image - often referred to as the Gesamtbild ("GB") mode - which holds the entire composed page at 640×400. For smaller screen graphics, the software can instead save at a lower resolution (320×200), for example in "BS" mode. The images may be stored uncompressed or compressed via a simple run‐length encoding (RLE), depending on the user's choice at save time.

Internally, a full‐page file begins with a single byte header which signals the format version. In the 640×400 mode ("GB"), that first byte is the hexadecimal value 0x47. Compressed images include a packing marker where a specific byte (0x9B) precedes a word indicating the number of bytes to follow as part of the RLE segment.
