What is a BFLI file?

A .BFLI file is a Big Flexible Line Interpretation Bitmap file.

Big Flexible Line Interpretation Bitmap is an image format used in graphics for the Commodore 64 that extends the standard Flexible Line Interpretation (FLI) mode by allowing full-screen or "big" images in that style. It stores color and pixel data laid out for bitmap graphics in the C64's non-standard "big" FLI mode, in order to display higher color detail per scanline than the native multicolor or hires bitmap modes permit.

These files are produced by programs that can export or save C64 graphics using a "big" FLI layout. Once created, they are read by C64 viewers, emulators, or conversion tools designed to interpret FLI bitmap data. Typical workflows include authoring the image in an editor or converter that supports "big FLI," exporting the .bfli file, then viewing or converting it to more common image formats on modern systems.

Internally the format is identified by a byte signature sequence of hex FF 3B 62 at offset 0. It is an extension of the C64 "FFLI bitmap" format - "big" denotes larger image dimensions or full-screen usage. The FF3B62 signature indicates that the file is a Big Flexible Line Interpretation Bitmap.

How to open BFLI files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BFLI file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BFLI file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
