What are BDC files and how to open them

What is a BDC file?

BDC files have multiple uses, and Babylon Dictionary is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Babylon Dictionary

These BDC files contain the translations used in Babylon Dictionary, an advanced desktop translator. Babylon has features like complimentary Wikipedia results, full-text translation, document translation, and language search results from well-known publishers.

How to open BDC files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BDC file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BDC file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While Babylon Dictionary is a popular type of BDC-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .BDC file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

West Point Bridge Designer Project

West Point Bridge Designer project files store the complete bridge design created in the West Point Bridge Designer (WPBD) software. These files capture everything needed to save a model of a bridge, including its geometry (joints and connecting members), material types, member cross-sections, load settings, support configuration, site parameters, and any user-entered identifiers or project metadata. They allow a design to be saved, reopened, edited, and tested within the WPBD environment.

The WPBD software writes these files when a user finishes designing a bridge and chooses to save. Later the same program reads them to reload or simulate the design, run load tests, check structural safety, estimate cost, or revise design parameters. It supports use in educational settings, competitions, or class assignments where users design, optimize, and test steel truss bridges under given constraints.

Internal identification includes specific byte signatures: at offset zero the file has the two-byte value 0x6EC6, and at offset four a byte value of 0x3D.
