What are BCPKG files and how to open them

What is a BCPKG file?

A .BCPKG file is a Beyond Compare Settings Package file.

The Beyond Compare Settings Package format stores a collection of configuration data for the Beyond Compare program from Scooter Software. It allows exporting and importing things like comparison rules, saved sessions, file format definitions, command-customizations, FTP profiles, and window layouts so those settings can be backed up, shared, or moved between installations.

These package files are produced by selecting Tools → Export Settings in Beyond Compare. During export the user picks which categories to include, for example sessions, file formats, program options, commands, or FTP profiles. The resulting package can then be imported via Tools → Import Settings or from the command line. In version 4.0.6 and later, silent import is supported so that settings can be applied non-interactively with a command like "bcompare file.bcpkg /silent".

Under the hood a settings package is a type of ZIP archive. It begins with the standard PK signature at offset zero and contains internal XML files. One identifier is the string "S.XML" which appears inside, and the ASCII sequence ".BC" occurs at offset 29.

How to open BCPKG files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BCPKG file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BCPKG file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
