What are BBX files and how to open them

What is a BBX file?

A .BBX file is a BrainBox Neural Net file.

BrainBox Neural Net files store the description of a neural network created with the BrainBox program by Neil Fraser. This format captures the network's structure - neurons, connections, and any manually assigned weights - so BrainBox can render the network graphically and run it interactively. There is no automated learning built in; users design the network manually by placing neurons, defining links, and setting weights, then simulate its behavior in real time.

These files are produced by BrainBox on Windows (ancient versions, such as Windows 3.1 or 95/98) when saving a neural network model. The saved data include all the elements needed for later inspection or execution by the same program: neuron definitions, link connectivity, weight values, and likely layout information for the graphical view. Users typically open these files with BrainBox itself to continue editing or running the network.

Files of this type are identified by a recognizable ASCII header: the file starts at offset 0 with the text "BrainBoxversion:" followed by version information, including ASCII "BrainBoxversion: …" and a period character at offset 30.

How to open BBX files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BBX file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BBX file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
