What are BAW files and how to open them

What is a BAW file?

A .BAW file is a BrainLED AlfaWave Session file.

BrainLED AlfaWave Session format is a proprietary session file created by the BrainLED AlfaWave software. It stores the configuration of a light-and-sound meditation or brain-wave stimulation session, including frequencies chosen (e.g. alpha, beta, theta, delta), durations, and possibly sound or visual stimuli settings that will be played by the software to guide relaxation, meditation, or related purposes. This format encapsulates both the cues and structure that define how the BrainLED AlfaWave program produces sensory stimulation over time. Information such as start frequency, target frequency, ramping behavior (if the session shifts between frequencies), session length, audio or light waveform parameters, and any predefined settings are saved in this file.

These session files are written by the BrainLED AlfaWave program on Windows. When launched, BrainLED AlfaWave reads the file to reconstruct the session settings so a session can be replayed exactly as it was configured. Users can use built-in or custom sessions: creating a session with specific frequencies or selecting a preset, and then saving it produces one of these files. If the file is edited externally (outside BrainLED AlfaWave), there is no assurance the program will interpret the changes correctly.

Files begin with a fixed ASCII signature at offset zero: the bytes 42 72 61 69 6E 4C 45 44 20 41 6C 66 61 57 61 76 65 0D 0A which read (in ASCII) "BrainLED AlfaWave␍␊". This identifies the format unambiguously.

How to open BAW files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BAW file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BAW file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
